Going into the medical field was an easy career choice for Dr. John DeCato. He comes from a family of surgeons who influenced his decision to become a doctor and surgeon. Dr. DeCato is now in his 31st year of practicing Podiatric Medicine and surgery in Ashtabula County with offices in Ashtabula and Conneaut.

While attending medical school, and as a resident, Dr. DeCato rotated through all departments in the hospital to gain knowledge in all areas of medical specialties. Any spare time he had was spent training specifically with plastic surgeons and orthopedic surgeons. It was this experience that brought Dr. DeCato to become specialized in podiatry: foot and ankle surgery. After graduating from Podiatric Medical School in Des Moines, Iowa and completing a surgical residency in Toledo, Ohio. Dr. DeCato returned to his hometown of Ashtabula.

John Eric DeCato DPM Inc. was established in 1991 to serve the community he grew up in. He and his wife, Dr. Lori Herpen, have since expanded their practice to include an office in Conneaut. Dr. DeCato is an active member of the community and has served on many community organizations. Dr. DeCato has previously been active in the Ashtabula Rotary, Ashtabula Arts Center board, American Cancer Society board, and the Grand River Academy board of trustees. He has also served on multiple committees with the Ashtabula County Medical Center, including as member of the Medical Executive Committee, Peer Review Committee, and previous Chief of the Podiatry Department.

Dr. DeCato is grateful for the support the Ashtabula County community has provided him through the years. “I could not think of a more fulfilling career choice. I am humbled by this community allowing me to provide them care for over 30 years. I look forward to continuing to care for our patients, as well as our community.”
